In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was fully God. The Word was with God in the beginning. All things were created by him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind. And the light shines on in the darkness, but the darkness has not mastered it.
John 1:1-5
The heavens declare the glory of God;
the sky displays his handiwork.
Day after day it speaks out;
night after night it reveals his greatness.
There is no actual speech or word,
nor is its voice literally heard.
Yet its voice echoes throughout the earth;
its words carry to the distant horizon.
Psalm 19:1-4
Sky Words
The Word writes tight
Across the sky
Hand lettering glory
In the looping cursive of martins singing forth the dawn
And straight sober lines of geese seeking
Comfort.
The Word writes light
Inside the brackets of constellations
Declarations of majesty
Punctuated by a single star long dead but still shining
For my little eye to see
Hope.
The Word writes might
In crashing crescendos
Zig-zagging
On purple-blue-terracotta canvas
Stretched across the sky like
Possibility.
The Word writes sight
As darkness recedes after long night
Chased away
By scarlet-coral-flamingo-sherbet
Accented by smoke grey clouds floating new
Mercy.
The Word writes
Without words
Across my soul.
His voice carries
To the distant horizon
Of my resistance.
He echoes
In my Night
He sounds the shofar
Of my morning.
The Word speaks
To me.
Oh to have sky words
Heaven-scribed
For the world.
