The Mother Heart of God

a chain of daisies shaped like a heart describing the subject of the post: the mother heart of God.

Can a woman forget her baby who nurses at her breast? Can she withhold compassion from the child she has borne? Even if mothers were to forget, I could never forget you! Isaiah 49:15

Mother’s Day reminds us we need mothering. That may make us angry, or it may make our hearts swell with gratitude for our mothers. In any case, no matter our age or status, we don’t outgrow our need for an encourager and comforter who can help make everything okay again.

Much has been discussed in recent decades about the father heart of God. But God is not just a father; God is also a mother. God is our number-one-cheerleader (Joshua 1:9), the comforter who gives peace when we cannot find it elsewhere (John 14:27), and the lavish table-setter who urges us to take a second helping (Isaiah 61:7).

The mother heart of God is brooding over you and me today, thoughts fixed on us, heart set on our good, mind bent toward our blessing and comfort.

Yes, the heart of God is very much a mother’s heart.

God’s eyes saw your unformed body before you were born (Psalm 139:16).

God wove you together in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139:15).

God sings over you while you sleep (Zephaniah 3:17).

The Lord keeps vigil over you while you rest, watching and protecting you (Psalm 121).

God makes delightful plans for you to bring you hope and joy (Jeremiah 29:11).

The Lord keeps a journal of all your days and takes joy in your life no matter how old you are (Psalm 139:16).

God knows you better than anyone— even how many hairs are on your head (Matthew 10:30).

God is a Comforter, a Counselor, and a Teacher (John 14:16, 26, Isaiah 9:6).

The mothering love of God bandages your wounds and makes you a daisy chain of joy when you are sad (Isaiah 61:3).

God dresses you up with a beautiful, new, white dress (Isaiah 61:10, Revelation 7:9) and calls you a jewel on a necklace (Malachi 3:17).

God cares for the little birds but cares so much more for you (Matthew 10:29,31).

The Lord wants to hear what’s on your heart and never tires of listening (Psalm 22:14).

God says this about you, child:

Every part of you is so beautiful, my love. There is no flaw in you. Song of Songs 4:7

Now that sounds just like a besotted new mother as she beams at her baby and secretly thinks hers is the most beautiful of all.

God is not just a father; God is also a mother. #MothersDay Share on X

Come to the Lord and be mothered on this Mother’s Day.

Lord, like a mother you know what I need and you take care of me. Thank you for mothering me. Amen.
