What Must We Do to be Doing?

Then they said to him, “What must we do to be doing the works of God?”

John 6:28

 

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

John 6:35

Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched.

Don’t get the cart before the horse.

Learn to walk before you run.

Look before you leap.

 

Come and believe before you start doing.

The crowds at the seaside that day wanted to know what they must do to do the works of God. Jesus’ enigmatic response didn’t fit their mental and cultural boxes.

Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent” (v. 29).

What? This didn’t fit the order of how things were supposed to happen. Do something godly first, and then we will believe. Trying to understand, they offered Jesus a small course correction:

So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform?” (v. 30)

Do something and then we will believe. Our religion is all about doing, right?

Jesus’ gentle patience led them to a new way of thinking. The work is simple: Come to Me, and believe. This is the work God has given you.

What must we do to be doing?

Come, and believe.

Before you race out to take that loan to keep your business from bankruptcy, come, and believe that I am Jehovah Jireh, your provider.

Before you wrestle with anxiety in the night watches, allowing worry to rob your sleep, come to Me and believe that I have plans to give you hope and a future.

Before you despair over the prodigal child you love more than your own life, come to Me and believe that I am the author and finisher of that child’s story of faith.

Come, and believe that I am.

A question about doing was answered by a statement of being.

I am.

Is your cart in front of your horse today, bringing your journey to a frustrating standstill? Jesus is very good at putting things back in order. Come to Him, believe that He is all you need. The doing will be clear from there.

Lord, I come to You today, and I believe You are all I need. Amen.
