Where the Paths Meet

A cross silhouetted against sunrise with the words Where the Paths Meet describing the subject of the post.

Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice? At the highest point along the way, where the paths meet, she takes her stand…

Proverbs 8:1-4, NIV

There is a towering hill in our village, and those willing to make the climb will reach the highest point where three roads meet. Each road spills recklessly over the ridge in a different direction, but on that small summit, they are level for a while, joined as one.

I often walk there with my dog and today as I crested the heights, the words of Proverbs 8 1-4 resonated in my AirPods as I listened to the Dwell Bible app.

At the highest point along the way, where the paths meet, she takes her stand…

I could almost see Wisdom standing there, her voice echoing across the surrounding valleys, calling pilgrims up to the highest place where the paths meet, a level place where each individual road blends with its neighbor on common ground.

I used to be a hiker down in the valley, peering up at the ridge line. It was months before I discovered the road to the vista on which I now stood. Up there, the view is clear and beautiful. I can see so far! Tiled houses climb the mountain slopes and shimmering lakes stretch long and lazy on the valley floor. Autumn-painted vineyards march in tidy rows as farmers push wheelbarrows to and fro.

On the summit, there’s sacred silence. The paths pause their tumble over the hillside to listen to Wisdom. To stand together on a level place.

How interesting this little insight into where Wisdom delights to dwell. At the place where the paths meet, she takes her stand.

Sounds like unity to me.

This got me wondering, in the midst of what some people are calling an era of polycrisis, where on earth we can all meet on common ground.

We need wisdom, world.

Communities need wisdom. Any group of people with a desire to accomplish great things for God needs wisdom. Families, ministry teams, volunteers, crisis responders, worship teams, boards, businesses, committees, small groups, trauma debrief teams, prayer teams… the list goes on.

Wisdom is calling us today to the place where the paths meet, where our diverse dreams and directions, passionate opinions, and brilliant strategies pause awhile and come together. She’s asking us to take a knee and focus for a moment on the way we’re all the same

You see, the highest place where the paths meet, that sacred space where #Wisdom takes her stand, is at the cross. Share on X

We are exactly the same in our need for a Savior. We are equal objects of a Father’s love that is so great he gave His only Son to save us.

There on the highest place stands the cross. And beneath feet worn bare from valley hiking is level ground. It was on the cross that Jesus carried all our sins and failures, our inability to get along, our stubborn opinions, our unwillingness to forgive one another, our selfish desires, our weaknesses. He carried it all, and He paid for it all. And from that highest place where all the paths meet at Calvary, He unified us with His blood.

It’s from that great pinnacle that Wisdom speaks.

Do you need wisdom today? Make the climb to the highest place where all the paths meet. You’ll find other pilgrims there. Bow together now and hear what Wisdom has to say to all mankind.

Lord, bring us together in unity and counsel us with wisdom. Amen.
